August 12 is the annual day to celebrate Youth : « On this important day, let’s join hands across generations to break down barriers, and work as one to achieve a more equitable, just and inclusive world for all people”, states United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres.

Yesterday, we told you about vulnerability in disaster resilience building, mentioning elderly, children or LGBTQIA+ groups, through some articles and reports that nourished our news digest. What a good transition to introduce more generally the International Youth Day 2022, whose objective, recalls the UN, is “to amplify the message that action is needed across all generations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and leave no one behind [and] raise awareness on certain barriers to intergenerational solidarity, notably ageism, which impacts young and old persons, while having detrimental effects on society as a whole”.

In 2020, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) launched a large discussion with partner institutes about a phenomenon observed by all: the resurgence of confusion between Earthquake Early Warning, Aftershock Forecast, and Predictions, which frequently led to the circulation of misinformation about earthquakes.

Women are not vulnerable in itself and hurricanes, megafires or floods are not misogynistic: a foregone conclusion that should not make us forgetting that we are not all affected equally by natural or man-made disasters. Understanding how gender inequalities drive disaster impacts, and vice versa, is the only way to implement effective policies for building a strong and inclusive resilience.

Requests for Assistance in 2021

Last January 2022, the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) published a Daily Map that shows all the Requests for Assistance in 2021 (in the frame of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism) in the world.
