๐Ÿ”Ž FOCUS on Professor Dilanthi Amaratunga BSc, PhD, FHEA, FRICS, FRGS, CMgr FCMI (Head of Global Disaster Resilience Centre (The University of Huddersfield - CORE partner)), who will take the floor on "Gender Equality in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)".

 ๐Ÿ“‘ ABSTRACT ๐Ÿ“‘

๐Ÿ‘‰ Disasters donโ€™t discriminate, but people do. Due to existing socio-economic conditions, cultural beliefs and traditional practices, women are more likely to be disproportionately affected by disasters, including loss of life and livelihoods.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Research reveals that disasters reinforce, perpetuate and increase gender inequality, making situations worse for women. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 acknowledges the specific vulnerabilities of women in disasters, and also recognizes the indispensable role of women in risk reduction efforts.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Womenโ€™s participation is important at all levels of disaster risk reduction. However,  the potential contributions that women can offer to the disaster risk reduction imperative around the world are often overlooked and female leadership in building community resilience to disasters is frequently disregarded.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Women are still too often absent from the development and implementation of disaster risk reduction strategies and decision-making processes. To achieve greater parity in DRR-related actions including that of decision-making, concerted action is needed to provide capacity building and skills-enhancement opportunities to allow women to take an active and leading role in DRR.

๐Ÿ‘‰ We need to reduce the barriers and ensure higher participation and leadership of women in the DRR.
